JOSÉ MARÍA PAZ GAGO AND ABRAHAM RIVERA WIN "EX AEQUO" THE XXX NATIONAL PRIZE FOR GASTRONOMIC JOURNALISM "ÁLVARO CUNQUEIRO" WITH THE PUBLICATION "THE GREAT BOOK OF GALICAN COCIDO AND ITS CAPITAL, LALÍN" AND THE REPORT "IN SEARCH OF THE LAST GALICIAN OCTOPUS" IN EL PAÍS

The jury decided to recognise the quality of the works "El Cocido es trending topic" broadcast by la Sexta and "Del carquinyoli a la lucha de clases..." broadcast by Cadena SER.

The works presented by José María Paz Gago and Abraham Rivera, "ex aequo", were unanimously awarded by the jury with the XXX National Award of Gastronomic Journalism "Álvaro Cunqueiro", promoted by the City Council of Lalín in collaboration with the Faculty of Communication Sciences of the University of Santiago de Compostela, with the Galician gastronomic associations and with the Tourism Agency of Galicia (Xunta de Galicia) and recognized as the most important gastronomic award in Spain.

José María Paz Gago was chosen for his gastronomic journalistic work "El gran libro del Cocido gallego y de su capital, Lalín" ("The great book of Galician stew and its capital, Lalín"), a wide-ranging and in-depth work on one of the most deeply rooted dishes in Galician gastronomy. Paz Gago, born in Celanova, is a lecturer at the University of A Coruña in the area of Literary Theory and Shared Literature and a prestigious writer. Author of numerous books and works on Galician writers such as Pardo Bazán, Valle-Inclán, Cela, Curros Enríquez and Álvaro Cunqueiro, he founded and edited the magazine La Tribuna. Cuadernos de Estudios de la Casa-Museo Emilia Pardo Bazán, of which he was president of the Scientific Committee. He is the driving force behind the Instituto de Estudios Emilia Pardo Bazán, and has just published an unpublished detective novel by the writer from A Coruña, entitled Los misterios de Selva (Santiago, Ézaro, 2021) and the illustrated work La vida contemporánea. Emilia Pardo Bazán en su tiempo y en él nuestro (A Coruña, Hércules de Ediciones, 2021). The work on Galician stews is the last of the works bearing her signature.

For its part, the jury put at the same level the work "In search of the last Galician octopus", published by El País Semanal and carried out by the journalist Abraham Rivera Duque. A careful and elaborate report that talks about one of the "delicatessen" of Galician cuisine, the octopus. This report deserved the recognition of the jury for its high quality and content. Rivera Duque has more than 20 years of experience in writing cultural and lifestyle content for media such as El País, eldiario.es, Guía Repsol, Traveler or Vanity Fair. He was director of the programme Retromanía on Radio 3.

The members of the jury also agreed to recognise the quality of the works "El Cocido es trending topic" broadcast by La Sexta and presented by Carlos Prado Pampín and "Del carquinyoli la lucha de clases: por qué los gourmets no añoran a Vázquez Montalbán" broadcast by Cadena SER and presented by Carlos G Cano. This was agreed by the members of the jury in their deliberation which took place this morning in the Town Hall of Lalín. The jury, chaired by the mayor of Lalín, was made up of prominent journalists such as Martín Fernández Vizoso (who participated via videoconference), Alberto Barciela, Carolina Carballedo (representing the Galician Tourism Agency), Belén Xestal, as well as the dean of the Faculty of Communication Sciences of the USC, Ana Isabel Rodríguez Vázquez, and the previous dean, Xosé Ramón Pousa.
