The 51st edition of the Cocido Fair will take place on 24 February 2019. This year, the event will feature a programme boasting once again more than 50 activities scheduled throughout the weeks before and after the big day. Unlike other gastronomic festivals held all over Galicia, Lalín Cocido Fair binds together a whole range of options that make our town a point of interest both at regional and national level at the beginning of each year.
For the Mayor of Lalín, Rafael Cuíña, the Cocido Fair is a gastronomic event that exalts our most popular and remarkable dish of the Galician cuisine. Thus, the Cocido Fair must return to its condition of popular festival open to everyone; a fair by and for the people with a firm commitment to quality, participation, citizen collaboration, and solidarity.
“From St. Amarus’ Day to St. Valentine’s Day, Cocido Month in Lalín”, as the saying goes. This means that from 15 January to 14 February, about thirty food-serving establishments in our local region include in their menus our most traditional dish on a daily basis and at a reasonable price in order to achieve maximum exposure among all our visitors and those who dare to savour it. All participating establishments are subject to the Lalín Cocido Fair Seal of Quality, which guarantees visitors the opportunity to live a unique experience.
Promotion in farmers markets
The Town Council of Lalín has launched a new set of promotional events for the 51st edition of the Cocido Fair that will help broadcast this gastronomic festival and Lalín’s tourist attractions in the main cities of Galicia by making use of their farmers markets. The municipal Government chose this year this innovative proposal to advertise the Cocido as well as the tourist resources in our town. In particular, the initiative will imply touring the six main and best known farmers markets of our autonomous region, where a presentation of the Cocido Fair will be held — sponsored by GADIS, and in collaboration with ABANCA and COREN — that will include live cooking performed by Lalínean cooks along with free tapas tastings based on the Cocido pork stew and the Lalínean products, which will simultaneously allow to place value on the high quality of our catering industry and the new values of Lalínean cuisine. The events will always be accompanied of a broad selection of products made in Lalín, ideally complementing this promotion campaign, as well as the commercial offer of the municipality in general. The intense promotional campaign will develop over the coming weeks. It will take the Cocido to the most important farmers markets in Galicia, which will not only work as engines of the local trade, but also become attraction points for visitors. The programme will start in Pontevedra (18 January), and will continue visiting Vilagarcía (26 January), A Coruña (San Agustín Market, 2 February), (Vigo, 5 February), Lugo (9 February), and Santiago de Compostela (16 February).
Álvaro Cunqueiro Prize
Among the cultural events, we can highlight the award of the “Álvaro Cunqueiro” Gastronomic Journalism Prize — which includes a section dedicated to junior journalists and awards 4,800 Euro among the winners in different categories — as well as the Galician Gastronomy Awards — which are given during a gala broadcasted live on the Galician TV channel.
This award is mainly intended to recognise heritage, social, cultural and landscape values of the many population centres there are in rural areas of Lalín. Consequently, it will contribute to develop one of the local Government’s main intentions for this mandate: promoting the valorisation, care, recovery, and restoration of places and parishes in Lalín. This distinction is given yearly as part of the events taking place during the Cocido Fair day, taking advantage of this day’s appeal to highlight the importance of our rural environment.
The so-called Solidarity Cocido replaces the former official lunch. By celebrating this event, the Town Council of Lalín intends to raise funds for charitable purposes in order to donate them to different non-profit associations in the municipality, thereby collaborating in the fulfilment of social actions, one of the local Government’s priorities. This year the funds will go to the local association Carabelo. Attendance to the 2019 Solidarity Cocido, which will be held in Pazo de Bendoiro, will be open to the general public.
IV Lalín Pride
Lalín Pride takes place in May in collaboration with different LGTBI entities. This will be a recreational, but also educational and activist event with a firm commitment to equality and diversity.
In Lalín, Culture = Life
In addition to the already mentioned cultural initiatives, there are as well activities addressed to the youngest ones — such as the Cocido Miúdo —, various sports competitions — like the Cocido Rally or Cocido Race —, or musical performances during the weeks leading up to the celebration of the Cocido Fair. The cultural programme is rounded up with performances of local bands.
Ultimately, what we intended is that “the prominence of this gastronomic festival falls on the residents, restaurant owners and business owners; a fair by and for the people”.
